New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul is out for six weeks after having surgery to repair a sports hernia. He underwent the procedure Wednesday morning, according to ESPN.

That leaves the Giants without one of their best pass rushers for the rest of the regular season. It leaves open the possibility that they won’t have JPP early in the postseason, if they make it that far.
Pierre-Paul is second on the team with seven sacks, one less than Olivier Vernon. JPP also leads the team with three forced fumbles. Together, the two have recharged Big Blue’s pass rush and the entire defense this season. The Giants are limiting opponents to an average of 19.8 points per game, the eighth-best mark in the NFL.
At 8-4, the Giants are currently the fifth seed in the NFC, the first Wild Card. Pierre-Paul’s injury comes with a primetime game against the Cowboys this week. They play the Lions the week after that, and then finish the season with two division road games, against Philadelphia and Washington.
