Dallas police send Johnny Manziel domestic violence case to grand jury

Whether or not Manziel will be charged is in the hands of the district attorney and by extension, the grand jury.

The Dallas Police Department has concluded its investigation into Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel and the incident he was involved in with an ex-girlfriend in late January. The department announced a Class A misdemeanor assault/domestic violence case has been referred to the Dallas County District Attorney's office for presentation to a grand jury, according to a statement released on Thursday.

The grand jury will decide if formal charges will be filed against Manziel. As expected, there won’t be any information regarding the conclusions of the investigation while the case is pending with the grand jury.

Manziel was accused of telling his then-girlfriend Coleen Crowley that he would “kill us both,” and of forcing her into a car, striking her multiple times and dragging her by the hair. The Browns originally stated that they would give everyone on the roster a chance to be evaluated but it’s already been reported that the team will cut ties with Manziel as soon as the new league year starts on March 9.

Browns head coach Hue Jackson made it clear on Wednesday that Manziel’s actions would not be tolerated:

“I think his future on our team will be addressed pretty soon, but let me say this: I think it’s real important, that obviously there were some people involved in the situation that happened, and I feel very bad about those things as they do happen, but I want to make sure we all understand that that behavior will not be tolerated as we move forward.”

Manziel was also dumped by his agent, Erik Burkhardt, following the incident. He was not arrested, though Crowley was later granted a protective order against Manziel.
