Boston Marathon 2016: Time and TV schedule for Monday’s race

The 26.2-mile Boston Marathon is set to get underway on Monday.

The 120th running of the Boston Marathon is set for Monday in Massachusetts. Officials expect roughly 32,000 people to compete in the Patriots’ Day race, which typically sees up to a million spectators along the course’s 26.2-mile route. The course begins in Hopkinton and ends on Boylston Street in Boston.

NBC Sports Network has coverage of the race, starting at 8:30 a.m. and running for a couple hours. There will be a live stream available at NBC Sports Live Extra.

Runners will go through the towns of Ashland, Framingham, Wellesley, Newton, Natick and Brookline before finishing up in Boston. The halfway point is at Wellesley College, while Heartbreak Hill may be the most famous part of the course as a series of four hills over 20 miles into the marathon.

While the majority of the people racing won’t be competing for a top finish, there are several big names to watch. Defending champion Lelisa Desisa is looking to earn his third Boston Marathon win. Yemane Tsegay, who finished second last year, will be Desisa’s top competition on the men’s side. For the women, Caroline Rotich of Kenya is the defending champion and looking to repeat this year.

The starting times will see the race proper begin at 8:50 a.m. ET, though the elite groups don’t hit the road until later. The elite women group take off at 9:32 a.m., while elite men and the large groups of other competitors will start at 10 a.m. and get underway in four waves through 11:15 a.m. The top male and female runners will take home $150,000 with a total of nearly $1 million in prize money to go around.
