All eight fighters on Saturday night’s HBO pay-per-view card made weight Friday in chilly, rainy conditions outside of T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. That included headliners Canelo Alvarez and Amir Khan, who each weighed in at 155 pounds, the catchweight limit for their bout.
Canelo vs. Khan weigh-in results: Fighters make weight, HBO PPV set
Saturday night’s HBO pay-per-view card is set, with Canelo Alvarez and Amir Khan making weight for the main event.
Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KO) will defend the WBC and Ring Magazine middleweight titles in this fight, taking on Khan (31-3, 19 KO), who has never fought above the welterweight limit of 147 pounds. It’s a familiar weight for Canelo, who has now had a 155-pound catchweight for his last five fights, which he’s able to do because he generates a lot of money and has leverage in negotiations. Following last November’s win over Miguel Cotto, Alvarez’s leverage has only gotten stronger.
The choice of Khan as opponent has been controversial since it was first announced. However, there are certainly cases in boxing history where smaller fighters have gone up in weight, even against the odds, and been successful. Will Khan add to that? We’ll see Saturday night.
The three pay-per-view undercard fights are also set. Middleweights David Lemieux (34-3, 31 KO) and Glen Tapia (23-2, 15 KO) weighed in at 160 and 159½, respectively. Their 10-round fight is for the vacant NABO belt, a minor title within the WBO. Mauricio Herrera (22-5, 7 KO) and top prospect Frankie Gomez (20-0, 13 KO) weighed in at 146 and 145½ pounds for their fight, which had a 146-pound catchweight, one pound below the full welterweight limit. And middleweights Patrick Teixeira (26-0, 22 KO) and Curtis Stevens (27-5, 20 KO) came in at 159 and 160. Both of those fights are also set for 10 rounds.
SB Nation will have live coverage Saturday night beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET. For much more on Canelo-Khan and all things boxing, visit SB Nation’s Bad Left Hook.
