Kentucky Derby 2016 video: Nyquist wins the Run for the Roses

Nyquist has won the 142nd Kentucky Derby, his eighth race and his eighth win. He’s the first to leave the Derby undefeated since Big Brown in 2008.

Danzing Candy was the pace-setter, getting out to a lead of several lengths and holding it through three-quarters of a mile. But as the horses approached the stretch, Nyquist pulled ahead. He wouldn’t be caught.

Nyquist was the heavy betting favorite, listed at 2-1 odds by post time. Exaggerator, who finished in second, was another horse some thought could win, with 5-1 odds despite a history of losing races to Nyquist. The rest of the field wasn’t well-loved by bettors, with nobody else cracking 10-1 odds.

With the win, all eyes turn to the next two legs of the Triple Crown, the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes. Of course, American Pharoah made history last year by winning the first Triple Crown since Affirmed in 1978, an incredible feat some thought might never happen again. Well, now it’s been done, and it’s up to Nyquist to try to do it again. He’d be the first undefeated Triple Crown winner since Seattle Slew in 1978.
