Belmont Stakes latest odds 2016: Suddenbreakingnews getting plenty of betting attention
While Exaggerator continues to remain the favorite to win the 2016 Belmont Stakes on Saturday, Suddenbreakingnews is getting more than just a little attention from those placing bets.

The breaking news in the world of the 2016 Belmont Stakes is that Suddenbreakingnews is getting plenty of attention from the oddsmakers, according to the odds updates at Belmontstakes.com. Suddenbreakingnews, which took fifth at the Kentucky Derby, is now at 5-1 odds, an increase in standing since Saturday morning when they were 7-1 (with a 10-1 morning line). As of 11:45 a.m. ET, Suddenbreakingnews had $195,831 placed on a win by bettors.
Of course, that's not enough to unseat the odds-on favorite, Exaggerator, who won the Preakness Stakes and dethroned the previously undefeated and Kentucky Derby winning Nyquist. He currently stands at 6-5 odds (up from 5-4 earlier and 9-5 morning line) to win the $1.5 million, 1-1/2-mile race. He has $571,877 bet on him as of 11:45 a.m.
The forecast expecting the weather to bring rain showers to the track shouldn't hinder Exaggerator in the odds or in the race as three of his best career races have been on muddy and wet tracks, including the victory at the Preakness.
Nyquist was removed from the race after the colt came down with a fever and showed a high white blood cell count following the Preakness.
Another horse that has potential in the longer track of the Belmont Stakes race is Cherry Wine, and the betting crowds have taken note, putting the horse’s odds at 8-1 currently, up from 9-1 earlier and returning to the original morning line odds. Cherry Wine had a strong showing in the Preakness Stakes when he came from behind to pass Nyquist for second place.
A horse that has made a move in the odds is Lani, who is now at 9-1 odds after starting with a morning line of 20-1 and was at 16-1 earlier Saturday.
SB Nation horse racing expert Kurt Mensching has been impressed with Lani’s showing in the last two Triple Crown races.
Interestingly, Lani, who starts one position to the inside of Exaggerator, could provide some of the strongest competition. The Japanese-trained horse ran in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, and posted a much better showing in the latter race. He’s the only other horse to compete in all three Triple Crown races.
As Horse Racing Nation notes, Lani “has the pedigree to run all day. We know the qualifications of his sire [Tapit].”
In short: Tapid’s progeny have proven to be great racers. Most recently, Tonalist won the Belmont Stakes in 2014.
NBC will televise the Belmont Stakes beginning at 5 p.m. ET, and provide streaming coverage at NBC Sports Live Extra. You can watch coverage of the undercard on NBCSN beginning at 3 p.m. NBC Sports Live Extra will steam that, as well.
