On Monday, the men’s 3-meter springboard and women’s 10-meter platform semifinals were held in Indianapolis for the Olympic Diving trials, and on Tuesday the reverse will happen. The trials, held to determine those who will compete for the United States at the 2016 Rio Olympics, will continue with the women’s 3-meter springboard and men’s 10-meter platform events.

David Boudia, a gold medal winner for the United States in 2012, will be competing in the men’s 10-meter platform semifinals on Tuesday.

The solo 10-meter platform was a big event for the United States last time out at the London 2012 Olympics. There, David Boudia captured the only gold medal the country got in diving that year. Some considered it an upset that they did not perform better, with China dominating the gold medal count. The United States has 49 gold medals in diving, with China in second place at 33.
Boudia will be participating in the 10-meter platform again, though he has tough competition in Steele Johnson, his partner for these trials in the synchronized 10-meter platform event. Boudia said that he expected the competition with Johnson to be a “dogfight.”
American women have not won a solo 3-meter springboard medal since 1988 when Kelly McCormick took the bronze medal. That year, China took the gold and since then have won every gold medal in the event. They have also taken four silvers and a bronze medal in the event, and they’re rapidly catching up to the United States because of it.
So a lot of pressure will be on the competitors, but thus far everyone has been looking great and that’s the purpose of these trials: to make each other better and strive to be the best.
Tuesday’s action will begin at 10 a.m. with an un-televised preliminary round. The semifinals don’t get underway until 7 p.m., though scores from the preliminary round still count as scores are cumulative throughout those two rounds and the finals, which will be held on Sunday, June 26. These are the final semifinals of the USA Diving Olympic trials.
NBCSN will carry coverage of the semifinals beginning at 7 p.m. and running through 11 p.m. A live stream will be available via NBC Sports, running a simulcast of the broadcast.
