The last USA Diving preliminaries and semifinals for the 2016 Olympic trials are in the books. On Tuesday, the women’s solo 3-meter springboard and men’s solo 10-meter platform semifinals were held. On Wednesday, the finals of other events will get underway.
Olympic diving trials 2016 results: David Boudia leads Steele Johnson after 10-meter semifinals
The battle between David Boudia and Steele Johnson has been as good as promised.

Scores for the preliminary, semifinal and finals are cumulative and nobody was eliminated from the top 12 in the semifinals. But those who are behind know what ground they have to cover going into the finals.
On the women’s side, Kassidy Cook holds the lead, though she’s not out of reach of the people behind her. At 660.85, Cook is one bad dive away from just about everyone in the Top 12. The lowest score is 537.80 after the semifinals, and behind her is Abby Johnston, a medalist in diving in 2012, at 626.55. Laura Ryan rounded out the top three with a 611.60 score.
Johnston had a silver medalist in the synchronized 3-meter springboard event, but will have some ground to make up in the solo event in these trials. She out-scored Cook on many of her dives, but she also committed a couple errors on her own and that’s what put her in the deficit.
For the men, the importance of the 10-meter platform is well-known. David Boudia was the only American to take home a gold in the sport of diving at the London 2012 Olympics, and he was competing on Tuesday as well. His top competition was predicted to be the young Steele Johnson, who Boudia is teaming up with in synchronized play.
Boudia was in second place to Johnson going into the fifth of six rounds. But a dive that scored him over 100 points to one that netted Johnson just over 60 put him in the lead with one round to go. But after Boudia nailed a dive of 86.40 points in the sixth round, his total was 1007.25, and Johnson, at 888.00, would have needed a miracle to take first place.
He didn’t get it, and Boudia leads going into the finals. It’s not an insurmountable lead, however, as Johnson finished with 961.80 points. David Dinsmore is challenging both of them in third, though, with 953.90 points. Nobody else managed to break 800 points on the day.
The conclusion of the two events showcased on Tuesday will not be until Sunday, June 26. Wednesday will see the men’s synchronized 3-meter springboard and women’s synchronized 10-meter platform finals.
