The 2016 Olympic trials continue on Wednesday, and the stakes will be raised higher with the first finals of the event, run by USA Diving. Preliminary and semifinal events were held over the past several days, but the last of those wrapped up on Tuesday with the women’s solo 3-meter springboard and men’s solo 10-meter platform semifinals.

The first finals of the 2016 Olympic trials are set for Wednesday.

On Wednesday, it’s back to synchronized competition as the men will participate in the synchronized 3-meter springboard final while the women will be in the synchronized 10-meter platform final.
For the men, all eyes will be on Troy Dumais and Kristian Ipsen, who enter the finals trailing behind the pair of Sam Dorman and Michael Hixon. Ipsen and Dumais are notable for being two of the few Americans who scored medals in diving at the 2012 London Olympics, a sport that was largely dominated by China that year.
The pair took bronze medals in the same event they’ll be participating in together tonight. Last time, they came up short to the pair of Ilya Zakharov and Evgeny Kuznetsov of Russia and the pair of Luo Yutong and Quin Kai of China.
Dorman and Hixon hold a 56.52-point lead over the medalists going into the finals. Scoring is cumulative throughout preliminaries, semifinals and finals so they maintain the lead they built in the last round. Dorman himself is coming off a strong performance in solo diving, where he had the highest-scoring dive of any men on Monday.
For the women, the pair to watch will be Jessica Parratto and Amy Cozad. Mostly, the pair simply need to limit their mistakes as they also have a healthy lead over the second-place pair of Anna James and Katrina Young. Parratto and Cozad, who are both doing quite well for themselves in solo competition, have a score of 617.28 to James and Young’s 576.00.
Wednesday’s events will begin at 9 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on television by NBCSN. A live stream will be available at NBC Sports Live Extra, with coverage expected to run about two hours.
