The finals of the 2016 Olympic diving trials got underway on Wednesday, with the men’s synchronized 3-meter springboard and women’s synchronized 10-meter platform finals. On Thursday, synchronized play will continue as the men’s synchronized 10-meter platform final will be held.

These trials, hosted by USA Diving, will determine those who will compete in the 2016 Rio Olympics later this summer. The men’s synchronized 10-meter platform was one of the few diving events in which the United States managed to score a medal at the 2012 London Olympics. The team of David Boudia and Nicholas McCrory managed a bronze medal, coming up behind the team of Ivan Garcia and German Sanchez of Mexico (silver) and Cao Yuan and Zhang Yanquan of China (gold).

China is the United States’ biggest competition in diving. The United States has 49 gold medals in the sport over the years while China is right behind with 33. No other country has double-digit gold medals, and the U.S. has 135 total medals to China’s 59 in the sport.

Boudia is participating in this year’s event once again, but this time around he has a new partner in Steele Johnson. The young diver has been Boudia’s toughest competition in solo play, but the pair together have absolutely dominated the synchronized event. After the preliminaries and semifinals, Boudia and Johnson have a score of 835.56, a massive 124.98-point lead over Ryan Hawkins and Toby Stanley in second with 710.58 points.

Scoring is cumulative over the preliminaries, semifinals and finals so Hawkins and Stanley will have a ton of ground to make up on Thursday. Max Showalter and Zachary Cooper are also battling for second as they hold third with a score of 698.46 after the semifinals.

Thursday’s finals will be broadcast on television by NBCSN, beginning at 7 p.m. ET. The coverage is expected to last around an hour and a half, and will be simulcast live online via NBC Sports.
