David Boudia, the only gold medal winner for the United States in the sport of diving in the last Olympics has punched another ticket to the games. Alongside new partner Steele Johnson, the pair dominated the synchronized men’s 10-meter platform event at the Olympic trials in Indianapolis, and will compete in the 2016 Rio Olympics later this summer.

Boudia has officially made his third Olympic team while Johnson is making his first. Boudia also competed in this event at the London Games and managed to snare a bronze medal with Nicholas McCrory as his teammate. They finished behind Ivan Garcia and German Sanchez in second and the pairing of Cao Yuan and Zhang Yanquan in first with the gold.

China dominated the sport of diving last time out, but the United States is hoping to take it to them this year. Boudia and Johnson looked incredible and finished way ahead of everyone else in the competition. They finished the finals with a score of 1,326.57, well ahead of Ryan Hawkins and Toby Stanley. Those two were in second with 1,088.55 points.

Scoring was cumulative throughout preliminaries, semifinals and finals, and coming into Thursday, Boudia and Johnson already had a significant lead and were heavily favored to win it. They simply needed a clean day of diving but went all out and did quite well over the six rounds of competition.

Boudia and Johnson will face each other, alongside David Dinsmore, for the two individual platform berths for the Rio Olympics. Boudia is the defending champion in that solo event though, and is expected to beat Johnson and Dinsmore, with the winner between those two getting the second berth. Only one pair from Thursday gets to advance, however.
