Olympic trials 2016, men’s gymnastic results: Former Olympian Sam Mikulak on top after Day 1

Sam Mikulak, a London 2012 Olympian, is on top of the standings after one of two days of Olympic trials for men’s gymnastics.

The 2016 Olympic gymnastics trials got underway on Thursday, with a few former Olympians, several United States national team members and plenty more. The trials are one of two major gymnastics events used to help the U.S. Olympic Selection Committee determine who will represent the country in the sport for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

This year, the trials consist of two days, starting on Thursday and ending on Saturday, with each day featuring all six Olympic events. Those events are the floor exercise, pommel horse, still rings, vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar. All events were run on Thursday and all will be run again on Saturday.

Danell Leyva, a former Olympian who managed a medal in the 2012 Olympic Games, ended up in third place on the day with a total score of 88.725. He trailed Sam Mikulak, another former Olympian, and Chris Brooks. Mikulak holds the lead after a day of competition at 90.650, with Brooks in second at 89.175. It’s all close, with the next three all having 88 or more.

Leyva was the only person to score a medal for the United States in men’s gymnastics at the 2012 London Olympics. He landed a bronze medal in all-around, though it’s worth noting no one country dominated the sport last time out. China was the only country to take multiple gold medals in men’s gymnastics in London.

Saturday’s event will begin at 8 p.m., and will be broadcast on NBC starting at 9 p.m. The event will last around two hours, and a live stream will be available from start to finish at NBC Sports.
