Many NHL Draft experts thought that the top three picks in the 2016 Draft were locks: Auston Matthews, Patrik Laine and Jesse Puljujarvi would go, even if not necessarily in that order.
Jesse Puljujarvi’s jaw literally dropped when he wasn’t drafted No. 3 overall
He thought he was a lock to go in the top three. Guess not.


The first two worked out just fine, with Matthews going to Toronto first overall and Laine going to Winnipeg second. And then the Columbus Blue Jackets hit the stage and took Pierre-Luc DuBois, who was expected to go perhaps outside of the top five, with the third pick.
Everybody was surprised. Puljujarvi included.
That’s the face of a young man realizing he’s about to move to Edmonton. The Oilers took him with the next pick at No. 4 overall.
