Gymnastics hasn’t been the kindest sport for the United States in the Olympics. They have performed well over the years, but they do not dominate like they have in, say, diving, where they have so many more medals than the next country that it seems like it will never change. In fact, in total medal count, the United States still trails the Soviet Union by a healthy margin.

Will Sam Mikulak keep his lead going into the final men’s gymnastics Olympic trial?

Furthermore, in recent years the medals have been won by women while men’s gymnastics has lagged behind, especially in the last Olympic Games in London back in 2012. The US took home three gold medals, winning in floor exercise, the individual all-around category and the team all-around category. But they were all thanks to the women, while the men only managed a single medal, a bronze for Danell Leyva in solo all-around competition.
This year, the US is hoping things go better in the 2016 Rio Olympics, though many of the competitors are the same. Sam Mikulak, who was an Olympian last time around, currently leads in the men’s gymnastics Olympic trials. The trials, which will help determine the US Olympic team, are held over the course of two days during which all six Olympic events -- floor exercise, pommel horse, still rings, vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar -- are conducted each day.
They are given a score for both days and a winner is crowned after the second day on Saturday. Mikulak currently leads with 90.650 points, but Chris Brooks is close behind with a score of 89.175 and Leyva is in third with a score of 88.725. Of the 18 competitors, 12 of them have at least 85 or more points so the competition is very wide open at this stage.
Saturday’s event will get underway at 8 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on NBC, though their coverage won’t pick up until 9 p.m. To catch the gymnastics trials from the beginning, a live stream will be available via NBC Sports beginning at 8 p.m. and lasting the full two hours the event is expected to comprise.
