The final of the 2016 Olympic diving trials is set for Sunday. Several spots on the US Olympic team for the 2016 Rio Olympics have already been claimed, but Sunday features the main event: the solo men’s 10-meter platform final. It’s the main event for a lot of reasons, but a big part of it is the fact that David Boudia was the only American to get gold in the sport of diving at the 2012 London Olympics.

David Boudia, Steele Johnson and David Dinsmore will battle for two Olympic spots in the individual 10-meter platform on Sunday.

Boudia, now the defending champion in the event, is looking to make another appearance in the Olympics this year. After preliminary and semifinal rounds on June 21, Boudia finds himself on top fighting off Steele Johnson, a young diver looking for his first appearance in the Olympics. In fact, Johnson already has punched his ticket into Rio in the synchronized 10-meter event -- with Boudia as his partner.
Now Boudia leads with 1007.25 points, with Johnson just behind him at 961.80. Johnson actually held the lead after five of six rounds in the semifinals, but Boudia nailed a dive that scored him over 100 points and he took the lead away. Scoring is cumulative throughout the competition, so they’ll go into the finals on Sunday with the scores they finished with on June 21.
It’s not just a two-way battle, though. The top two performers will go on to represent the United States, but just behind Johnson is David Dinsmore with a score of 953.80. The next competitor is Zachary Cooper with 768.15, but he is quite a ways off on the top three. It should be an exciting event.
The event is set to begin at 7 p.m. ET, and will run for an hour. It will be broadcast live on NBC, with a live stream available via NBC Sports.
