Olympic diving trials 2016 results: David Boudia, Steele Johnson qualify after 10-meter platform finals

David Boudia will return for his third Olympic Games to represent the US in the individual 10-meter platform alongside Steele Johnson.

David Boudia will compete in individual events in the Olympics for the third time as he qualified in the important 10-meter platform event at the USA Diving trials on Sunday. Boudia, who had already qualified to represent the United States in the synchronized 10-meter platform alongside partner Steele Johnson, was dominant in the individual trials and came out on top on Sunday.

Boudia won Olympic gold for the US in the 2012 London Olympics and was the only American man to do so in the sport of diving. His final round to win Olympic gold totaled 568.65 points, and he came up just shy of that in his trails final, scoring 527.15 points. Boudia’s final tally was 1,534.40 points over the course of preliminaries, semifinals and finals.

His chief competition was his synchronized partner, Johnson. Boudia actually trailed Johnson going into the final round of the semifinals, but he ultimately took the lead going into the finals and did not let up. Fortunately, the top two competitors advanced, and Johnson’s score of 1,475.15 points was enough to push him over David Dinsmore, the man in third going into Sunday and the only one close enough to threaten his berth.

Dinsmore came very, very close, with a score of 1,463.15 points. At one point he had taken over second place when Johnson botched a dive in the second round on Monday.

On the women’s side, Kassidy Cook and Abby Johnston managed to come out on top in the individual 3-meter springboard event and will represent the US in Rio. Cook will be appearing in her first Olympic Games after finishing in first at the trials with a score of 1,003.65. She was injured during the 2012 trials and had to undergo surgery.

Johnston is a returning Olympian, having scored a silver medal in synchronized play in London. She finished second to Cook and ahead of notables Lauren Reedy, Laura Ryan and 14-year-old Maria Coburn, who rounded out the top five on Sunday.
