Olympic swimming trials 2016 results: Ryan Lochte misses out on 400-meter individual medley qualifying

Ryan Lochte will have several opportunities to qualify for the 2016 Olympics, but his first shot on Sunday was unsuccessful.

Five-time Olympic gold medalist Ryan Lochte has several opportunities to qualify for the 2016 Olympics in Rio, but on the first day of USA Swimming trials, he came up short in his first event. Lochte, the 2012 Olympic champion in the 400-meter individual medley, won’t get a chance to defend his title as he failed to qualify on Sunday.

Lochte was passed up by Chase Kalisz and Jay Litherland, who will represent the United States in the event in Rio. Lochte did the 400-meter individual medley in 4:05.18 to win gold in London, but a time of 4:12.02 in the trials on Sunday was only good enough to put him in third place in the qualifying event. Kalisz clocked 4:09.54, while Litherland managed a time of 4:11.02.

Lochte will also compete in the 100- and 200-meter freestyle, 200-meter backstroke, 100-meter butterfly and 200-meter individual medley. The two short freestyle runs may just be an opportunity for Lochte to convince coaches that he is still able to compete in the relays.

Sunday also featured the 400-meter freestyle, which was won by Connor Jaeger and Conor Dwyer, respectively. The pair will compete in their second Olympic Games after clocking 3:43.79 and 3:44.66, respectively. Maya DiRado and Elizabeth Beisel qualified for the Olympics with strong showings in the 400-meter individual medley as well on Sunday.

It’s DiRado’s first ever Olympics appearance, and it will also be her last as she plans to retire after the Games in Rio. For Beisel, it will be her third appearance as an Olympian, first debuting as a 15-year old in Beijing.

Lastly, the women’s 100-meter butterfly semifinals were also held on Sunday. Dana Vollmer and Kelsi Worrell are heavy favorites after clocking the two fastest times on Sunday. Vollmer won the gold in the event in London and her time of 56.90 was only just short of her time it took to win the gold. Worrell’s time of 57.12 was good enough for second.
