Olympic swimming trials 2016 results: Missy Franklin misses out in 100-meter backstroke

Missy Franklin will not represent the United States in the 100-meter backstroke at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Franklin, alongside Natalie Coughlin, has been largely responsible for the country’s dominance in the event over the last three Olympic Games. But Franklin and Coughlin both finished below Olivia Smoliga and Kathleen Baker at the USA Swimming Olympic trials on Tuesday.

Smoliga clocked 59.02 seconds and Baker managed 59.29 seconds to take the top two spots in the finals and spots on the US Olympic team. Franklin only managed seventh place with a time of 1:00.24 and Coughlin was last among those competing at 1:00.48.

Matt Grevers, another Olympic gold medalist, won’t swim in Rio in the 100-meter backstroke, the event for which he is the defending champion. Ryan Murphy and David Plummer both finished ahead of Grevers in the final for that event at Tuesday’s trials. Grevers posted a time of 52.76, while Murphy finished in 52.26 and Plummer in 52.28.

Ryan Lochte competed in the 200-meter freestyle final on Tuesday and the 2012 gold medalist finished in fourth place. That finish is good enough to put him in the Olympics in a relay spot, an event in which he’s won three gold medals already. He’s been on the 4x200-meter relay team every Olympics since 2004. Lochte still has a chance for individual competition as he has entered in the 100-meter freestyle, 200-meter backstroke, 100-meter butterfly and 200-meter individual medley.

Townley Haas won the 200-meter freestyle final with a time of 1:45.66, ahead of Conor Dwyer, who finished at 1:45.67. Lilly King and Katie Meili will make their Olympics debuts in the 100-meter breaststroke as the two finished on top on Tuesday. King finished in 1:05.20 while Meili finished at 1:06.07. Breeja Larson and Jessica Hardy, who swam at the Olympics in 2012, finished in fourth and sixth, respectively.
