Monsoon turns Aussie Rules game into unforgettable bathtub brawl
Rain is nothing new at sporting events, but what happened in Australia during an AFL game between the Sydney Swans and Gold Coast Suns was something else. The country’s northeast had been pounded with storms which resulted in Gold Coast having 9 inches of rain dumped in 24 hours. That much rain is too much for grounds crews to deal with, and makes it impossible to dry out a pitch for a football game -- so the teams played anyway.
What followed looked like something out of a movie. The photos are spectacular.
Players couldn’t believe the conditions they were playing in.
The rain turned the entire field into a huge swimming pool. It’s common for an AFL game to have basketball-like scorelines that finish in triple digits, but the teams couldn’t manage anything close to that. Sydney won 79-41.
Typically the bounce of the ball is a critical aspect of the game, but it just became stuck on the pitch. This led to some unconventional goals.
Nobody will forget this game for a long time.
