Track and Field has been a consistent sport for the USA at the Olympics. The trials for the 2016 Games in Rio will begin on Friday.

Athletics at the Summer Olympics consists of track and field, road running and racewalking events. For all of athletics at the Summer Olympics, the United States is well ahead of the rest of the pack with 320 gold medals and 767 total medals, far more than Great Britain with 194 total medals. It’s a sport in which the country has been consistent, and they were very good at the 2012 London Olympics, when they took home 28 total medals, including nine gold ones.
Friday’s events will be highlighted by the men’s shot put finals and the men’s 10,000-meter finals. There will be a full list of events taking place on Friday, but those are the highlights and will be available via live stream thanks to NBC Sports. There will also be men’s 400-meter and 800-meter races and women’s high jump, discus throw and long jump qualifying events. Finally, the women will run the first round of the 400- and 800-meter races.
Galen Rupp is the only athlete competing at these trials who has already qualified for the 2016 Olympics. Rupp finished first in the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials back in February and will try to qualify in his second event, the 10,000-meter race. He was a silver medalist in the event in London.
Joe Kovacs is the man to watch in the shot put finals. He is the 2015 world champion, and though he will face stiff competition in Ryan Crouser and Kurt Roberts, the No. 2 and No. 3 ranked players in the world, respectively, Kovacs is heavily favored to dominate in the event on Friday.
