Olympic trials 2016 schedule: Swimming, track and field set for Friday

Multiple Olympic trials events will get underway on Friday, including USA Swimming and US Track and Field trials.

Andrew P. Scott-USA TODAY Sports

While the USA Olympic Swimming trials in Omaha, Neb. are nearing their end, the US Track and Field Olympic trials are just getting underway in Eugene, Ore. Friday will feature some of the biggest events on the USA Swimming schedule and will see things get underway proper for US Track and Field.

NBC and NBCSN will provide coverage of several of the big swimming events, including the finals for the hotly anticipated men’s 200-meter individual medley finals, featuring Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte. NBC Sports will provide live streams for all of the swimming events on Friday, in addition to the two track and field finals: the shot put and 10,000-meter race.

More detailed TV and live stream coverage information for the events can be found below.

Phelps has already qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics in the 200-meter butterfly event, but Lochte is looking at the 200-meter individual medley as his last opportunity for qualifying as an individual. He has qualified in the 200-meter freestyle relay, however. Friday will also see Missy Franklin and Katie Ledecky competing in multiple events. Both have already qualified in individual events going into Friday.

Galen Rupp is the only athlete competing in this year’s Track and Field trials to qualify already for the 2016 Olympics, as he finished first in the Olympic Marathon Trials back in February. He’ll try to qualify for his second event, the 10,000-meter race on Friday. Joe Kovacs is the one to watch in the shot put finals. As the 2015 world champion, he’s looked on a different level to everyone else in the event this season.

The men’s shot put is Team USA’s strongest throwing event, with six of the year’s 10 best throwers being athletes representing the United States.
