Tour de France standings 2016: Tom Dumoulin wins time trial, Chris Froome likely wins Tour

Tom Dumoulin won the day, and Chris Froome might have won the whole Tour de France after taking second place on Friday’s time trial.

Stage 13’s time trial was calm compared to the ending of Stage 12. Tom Dumoulin turned in a time of 50 minutes and 15 seconds to win his second stage of 2016 Tour de France, and second Tour stage ever. The result was not surprising. Dumoulin won the Dutch national time trial title earlier this year.

Chris Froome took second place at just a minute and three seconds behind Dumoulin, not only retaining the yellow jersey but possibly giving himself an insurmountable lead. Froome is now the overwhelming favorite to win the Tour de France for the third time in his career.

Other GC contenders helped themselves, especially Bauke Mollema. With a sixth place finish at 52 minutes, nine seconds, he jumped up to No. 2 overall on the general classification. Adam Yates acquitted himself despite dropping to third overall, coming in 17th on the stage. Alejandro Valverde and Tejay Van Garderen also made big moves up the general classification after finishing 15th and 16th, respectively.

Nairo Quintana likely lost himself the Tour de France. He was never known as an exceptional time trialist, but he finished more than two minutes behind Froome. Likewise, Richie Porte and Fabio Aru had relatively disappointing finishes given their podium ambitions.
