Stage 16 is a hybrid sprint-y/classics-y stage to celebrate Peter Sagan or your favorite Sagan-lite rider -- Bryan Coquard, Julian Alaphilippe, Alexander Kristoff perhaps -- and take us to Switzerland before the final rest day of the 2016 Tour de France. The last time the Tour had a stage like this and we assumed it’d be a quiet day for the general classification, Chris Froome followed Sagan’s wheel to steal 12 seconds from his rivals.
Tour de France 2016 live stream: Time, TV schedule and route for Stage 16
There’s little to gain for the Tour de France general classification contenders on Stage 16, but that hasn’t stopped riders like Chris Froome before.
So we won’t assume anything, but if this ended as an inconsequential stage in regard to the yellow jersey it wouldn’t be surprising. The hardest days of the 2016 Tour are ahead of Tuesday’s rest day, and Stage 16’s mild undulations should keep time gaps under control.
Stage 16 will run 209 kilometers from Moirans-en-Montagne, France, to Bern, Switzerland, the fourth different country visited on this year’s Tour. Racing will begin at approximately 6:55 a.m. ET, and NBCSN will begin broadcasting at 7:30 a.m. Streaming will once again be available by subscription to NBC Sports Gold.
Froome seems unlikely to exert himself Monday. He’s already done plenty to wither his opponents’ confidence -- his fake attack on Stage 15 was classic big-bro-picking-on-little-bro behavior -- and can probably play defense from fourth position in the Sky train until Paris. His teammates will be sensitive to any attacks, and are more than capable of chasing down breakaways on their own.
Stage 16 isn’t a great stage to usurp Froome, anyway. The Tour is out of the crosswinds, so a surprise attack isn’t likely to go far. The one categorized climb, a Category 4, is barely that. The finish is interesting, with a 250-meter cobble stretch just before two kilometers to go and a small climb before the one-kilometer flat to the finish. But more than likely everyone will just take a breather and enjoy watching Sagan polish off another green jersey battle.
