Another productive day at the U.S. Track and Field Olympic trials in Eugene, Ore. saw multiple Olympians named to Team USA. The women’s long jump, discus throw and 10,000-meter race finals were all held and though there were few surprises, there’s plenty to cover.
U.S. Track & Field Olympic trial results: Whitney Ashley wins discus, Molly Huddle takes 10,000-meter top spot
The women’s discus throw, long jump and 10,000-meter race finals all took place at the U.S. Track and Field Olympic trials on Saturday.

Whitney Ashley won in the discus throw, with her best throw coming on her fifth attempt. She sent the discus 62.25 meters, beating out Shelbi Vaughan and Kelsey Card, who took second and third, respectively. Vaughan’s throw went 60.28 meters while Card came in at 60.13. Liz Podominick was just behind with 60.07, with nobody else in the event breaking 60 meters.
All of the top-three finishers will make their Olympic debuts in Rio.
Tianna Bartoletta had a very busy day on Saturday. She advanced to the 100-meter semifinals and minutes later put up a 7.02-meter jump in the long jump final. That jump was good enough to have her finish second in the event, punching her ticket to Rio. She was behind only Brittney Reese, who put up a distance of 7.31 meters for the longest jump in the world since 2004. Janay DeLoach finished third in the event with a jump of 6.93 meters.
Molly Huddle didn’t make the same mistake she made at the 2015 World Championships, where she let up early in celebration and was passed by Emily Infeld to claim the 10,000-meter bronze medal. Huddle crossed the finish line in the finals of the race on Saturday nearly five seconds ahead of Infeld, though both qualified for Rio, along with Marielle Hall.
Huddle posted a final time of 31:41.62, with Infeld in second at 31:46.09. Hall came in third at 31:54.77.
