Olympic trials 2016 schedule: Swimming’s final day and big track and field races

The final USA Swimming Olympians will be named on Sunday.

Erich Schlegel-USA TODAY Sports

The USA Swimming Olympic trials will conclude on Sunday, while the U.S. Track and Field trials will continue rolling right along. The track and field trials are being held in Eugene, Ore. and will run through July 10, while the swimming trials have been going on for more than a week and only have two events remaining.

Those events are the men’s 1,500-meter freestyle race and the women’s 50-meter freestyle race. Obviously, the two races are completely different beasts, with sprinter Madison Kennedy being the top-ranked American woman in the latter. The former is a grueling test with times that typically last more than 15 minutes.

But Conor Jaeger managed to eclipse the 15-minute mark, coming just under with a time of 14:58.59. That was the fastest time in the preliminary heats and he is certainly the one to watch in Sunday’s event. Kennedy will be the one to watch in the women’s race, for obvious reasons.

For track and field, the big events to keep an eye on Sunday include the men’s and women’s 100- and 400-meter races. Those are some of the best sprinting races on the calendar and both races will hold their finals on Sunday. There will also be the women’s high jump finals and the men’s long jump finals to keep an eye on.

NBC will carry television coverage of the men’s and women’s 100- and 400-meter finals beginning at 7:30 p.m. ET on Sunday evening. For swimming, NBC will also cover the men’s 1,500-meter freestyle final and 50-meter freestyle final, beginning at 7 p.m.
