Olympic swimming trials 2016 results: Abbey Weitzeil, Connor Jaeger qualify for Rio in 50, 1,500-meter freestyle races

The final events of the USA Swimming Olympic Trials are officially in the books, with the women’s 50-meter freestyle and men’s 1,500-meter freestyle finals taking place on Sunday. Abbey Weitzeil and Simone Manuel came out on top in the former event and will represent the United States in the event at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Weitzeil won the final with a time of 24.28 seconds to Manuel’s second place 24.33 seconds. Madison Kennedy narrowly missed out on the team by 0.15 seconds as only the top two finishers punch their tickets to Rio. Weitzeil and Manuel had already qualified to swim in the 100-meter freestyle earlier in the trials.

Connor Jaeger, who had already qualified for Rio in the 400-meter freestyle race, finished first in the 1,500-meter freestyle on Monday. Jaeger finished in a time of 14:47.61. Jordan Wilimovsky, the reigning 10k world champion, finished in second with a time of 14:49.19. He also had already qualified for Rio in open water racing.

Those events were the last of the trials, which ultimately saw all of Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte, Katie Ledecky and Missy Franklin -- the “big four” of American swimming -- qualify in various events. Phelps will defend his crown in the 100- and 200-meter butterfly in addition to the 200-meter individual medley. He’ll have Lochte to contend with in the latter event, though.

Lochte is also in the 200-meter freestyle relay, but the individual medley will be his only solo race in Rio. Franklin made it into the 200-meter freestyle and 200-meter backstroke races while Ledecky, perhaps the most dominant woman in swimming, will compete in the 200-, 400- and 800-meter freestyle races in Rio.
