US Track & Field Olympic trial results: Allyson Felix qualifies in 400-meter race, Marquise Goodwin misses out in long jump

Six-time Olympic medalist Allyson Felix has officially qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics. At the US Track and Field Olympic trials on Sunday, Felix won the 400-meter race in 49.68 seconds, clocking the fastest time in the world this year. That was all despite dealing with a right ankle sprain throughout the trials.

“It was the hardest challenge I’ve had,” Felix said after the event.

Felix has a full plate in front of her still as she hopes to qualify in the 200-meter race as well. Phyllis Francis and Natasha Hastings will join her in Rio in the 400-meter race. Unfortunately, 2012 Olympic gold medalist Sanya Richards-Ross did not race in the final due to a hamstring injury that prevented her from finishing her heat in the first round on Friday.

The 2015 world champion in the 400-meter race, Felix has gold medals in the 4x400-meter relay race over the past two Olympic Games. She has never ran solo at the Olympics and will do so for the first time in Rio. Friday is the first round of the 200-meter race.

NFL wide receiver Marquise Goodwin was unable to qualify for Rio in his primary event, the long jump. Goodwin put up a jump of 8.25 meters, good for seventh in the trials on Sunday. Jeff Henderson, Jarrion Lawson and Marquis Dendy were the top three finishers in the event and will compete in Rio. Will Claye technically finished third, but did not have a wind-legal Olympic standard.

Henderson’s winning jump was 8.59 meters. Lawson went 8.58 meters in second with Dendy going 8.42 meters.

It’s a disappointing finish for Goodwin, who nearly didn’t make it to the finals as he was the last competitor in, finishing 12th in the qualifying round. He entered these trials with the top two jumps in the world this year, but could not deliver on Sunday. His wife, Morgan Snow, will compete in the women’s 100-meter hurdles event on Thursday.

For another NFL tie, the daughter of former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Randall Cunningham, Vashti Cunningham, became the youngest US Track and Field athlete to qualify for the Olympics in 36 years by finishing second in the women’s high jump. Chaunte Lowe took first with a height of 2.01 meters, with Cunningham coming in at 1.97 meters. Inika McPherson will join the two in Rio after clearing 1.93 meters.

LaShawn Merritt, Gil Roberts and David Verburg will represent the United States in the men’s 400-meter race. In the 100-meter races on Sunday, English Gardner, Tianna Bartoletta and Tori Bowie took the top three spots for the women while Justin Gatlin, Trayvon Bromell and Marvin Bracy took them for the men.
