US Track & Field Olympic trial results: Amber Campbell qualifies for Rio in hammer throw

Amber Campbell’s hammer throw of 69.93 meters at London in 2012 was the longest ever for a U.S. female at the Olympics. She’ll try to do even better in Rio.

Amber Campbell has qualified for her third Olympic berth, finishing in first place in the hammer throw event at the USA Track and Field Olympic trials on Wednesday. Campbell took the top throw of 74.03 meters, beating out Gwen Berry, who managed a throw of 73.09 meters.

The top three finishers in the event qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics, which means Deanna Price also made it with a throw of 71.22 meters. Amanda Bingson, who represented the United States in the 2012 London Olympics, did not make the cut after finishing in fourth place with a score of 70.30 meters.

Berry broke the American record in May but had the result thrown out after receiving a ban for using a banned asthma medication. Price is a two-time NCAA champion for Southern Illinois University. Campbell just missed qualifying for the final round at the 2012 Olympics, but her throw of 69.93 meters in the qualifying round was the longest ever for a US female hammer thrower at the Olympics.

The men’s hammer throw finals were also held on Wednesday. In that event, 2012 Olympian Kibwe Johnson qualified for Rio and will participate in his second Olympics. He was unable to bring home a medal at the 2012 Games, but there is a lot of hope resting on him and the other two who made it: Rudy Winkler and Conor McCullough.

Winkler and McCullough are both first-time Olympians. Winkler was in first with a throw of 76.76 meters, with Johnson in second at 75.11 meters and McCullough in third at 74.16 meters. The top three qualify for the Olympics. A.G. Kruger, another Olympian from 2012, did not make the team as he qualified in fourth place, with his best throw going 73.31 meters.
