The first of two days of women’s gymnastics trials is set for Friday as competitors try to qualify for Team USA in the upcoming 2016 Rio Olympics.
Each day of competition will feature all four Olympic events -- the balance beam, floor exercise, uneven bars and vault. The Olympic team will consist of five gymnasts, though a committee will actually select the team after the trials. Only one gymnast can automatically qualify for Rio -- whoever finishes on top in all-around score over the course of the trials.
Gabby Douglas was that woman last time around, and she didn’t disappoint in London. She took home the individual all-around gold medal and also received a gold medal in the team all-around. Another gold medal went to Aly Raisman in the floor event, and both former Olympians will be competing at the trials on Friday as well.
Raisman also managed a bronze medal in the balance beam, while McKayla Maroney took a silver medal in the vault. Maroney will not be among the 14 gymnasts competing for dominance on Friday. While Douglas will be hoping to auto-qualify once again, she’ll face stiff competition in the form of Simone Biles, a woman who has not lost a single all-around competition in the last three years.
Friday’s events will get underway at 9 p.m. ET from the SAP Center in San Jose, Calif. NBC will carry live coverage of the event and a live stream will also be available on NBC Sports. The second day of women’s gymnastics competition will be on Sunday.
