United States gymnast Simone Biles hasn’t lost a single all-around competition over the last three years. She is a four-time national champion, a three-time world champion in all-around gymnastics, and is the favorite to qualify automatically for Team USA’s women’s gymnastics team for the upcoming 2016 Rio Olympics.
US Olympic trials 2016: Time and TV schedule for women’s gymnastics on Friday
Simone Biles is the woman to beat at the US Olympic Women’s Gymnastics trials on Friday.
Only one athlete can automatically qualify -- the one who finished on top of individual all-around competition at the Olympic trials, which will get underway on Friday at 9 p.m. ET, with a television broadcast carried by NBC and a live stream available via NBC Sports.
The remainder of the team is selected by a committee that heavily considers competitors based on their finishing at the trials.
Three gymnasts from each country will compete in each of the four individual events, which means that not every athlete needs to compete in all four events. The United States’ strongest team won’t necessarily consist of the five best all-around gymnasts. Instead, the team will be built based on individual strengths to field the most complete team possible.
Last time around, at the 2012 London Olympics, the committee chose well as the United States took home a gold medal in team all-around competition, individual all-around competition and the floor exercise. They also added a silver medal in the vault and a bronze medal in the balance beam.
Gabby Douglas, winner of the individual all-around, and Aly Raisman, winner of the floor exercise, will also be competing at the trials on Friday. They are some of Biles’ biggest competition, though all three are expected to make the final team.
Friday will consist of all four events -- the balance beam, floor exercise, uneven bars and vault. The trials will last two days, beginning on Friday and ending on Sunday, and all four exercises will be run through on each day. NBC’s coverage of Friday’s events gets underway at 9 p.m. ET, with a link to the live stream below.
