The people who dress up alongside the road of the Tour de France are a sometimes funny, mostly irritating presence. They annoy the absolute hell out of riders. At least once a year, one of these super fans gets popped by someone in the peloton. This year, the first casualty was a chicken man who got a little too close to Tour favorite Chris Froome.

After the stage, Froome tweeted that the man had been waving a flag that almost got stuck in his front wheel:
Getting abuse for the hand off of the spectator, camera doesn't show his flag almost going into my front wheel & across my handlebars!

The normally reserved Froome has been feeling feisty lately. He won Stage 8 of the Tour de France with a clever, aggressive move on the final descent that took advantage of his rivals’ inattention. He’ll be in the yellow jersey Sunday for what could be one of the Tour’s most decisive stages.
The fans will be there, too, for better or worse.
