Rio Olympics medal count 2016: United States adds to lead in golds and overall total

The U.S. earned its 10th gold Wednesday morning.

Kristin Armstrong won the women’s cycling time trial in windy and rainy conditions on Wednesday morning to add to the Americans’ lead in both gold and overall medals. Halfway through the fifth day of competition in Rio, the USA holds two more gold medals than second-place China and nine more medals overall. Australia is a distant third with nine total medals.

For Armstrong, it’s the 43-year-olds’ third Olympic win in the event, beating silver medalist Russia’s Olga Zabelinskaya by four seconds. She also won in Beijing and London.

The U.S. will have a good chance to add to its medal count on Wednesday. Sam Mikulak competes in the men’s individual all-around gymnastics competition, Kevin Cordes and Josh Prenot compete in the 200m breaststroke, Cammile Adams and Hali Flickinger are in the 200m butterfly, Caeleb Dressel and Nathan Adrian swim in the 100m freestyle and the women’s relay team competes in the 4x200 freestyle.

Here’s a look at the full updated medal count for the 2016 Olympics midway through action on Wednesday.
