Two more judo divisions saw medal matches take place on Wednesday at the 2016 Rio Olympics. The women’s 70kg division and men’s 90kg division crowned new champions and saw eight new medals distributed, thanks to judo allowing two bronze medals in each division.

Haruka Tachimoto and Mashu Baker both provided Japan with judo gold medals in Rio on Wednesday.


The first women’s semifinal saw Haruka Tachimoto of Japan face off against Laura Vargas Koch of Germany, while the second featured Yuri Alvear of Colombia up against Sally Conway of Great Britain. Tachimoto took the first, while Yuri managed the second, with both of them guaranteed at least a silver medal at this point.
In the bronze medal matches, Conway took on Austria’s Bernadette Graf while Vargas Koch faced Spain’s Maria Bernabeu, with Conway taking one bronze and Vargas Koch taking the other. But it was Tachimoto who secured a gold medal for Japan with her victory over Alvear in the final.
On the men’s side, the semifinals saw Mashu Baker of Japan and Xunzhao Cheng of China in one match, with Dong-han Gwak of South Korea taking on Varlam Liparteliani of Georgia in the other. Baker and Liparteliani came out on top in their respective semifinals and faced off in the gold medal contest.
In the men’s bronze medal matches, Gwak took down Sweden’s Marcus Nyman for one of the medals, while Cheng bested Otgonbaatar Lkhagvasuren of Mongolia. But the gold hardware went to Baker, who bested Liparteliani in the final, giving Liparteliani the silver medal.
