The reigning European champion was posed to make the medal stand as he went for his second attempt at 195kg. It even seemed like he was about to complete the lift, then his elbow popped. He was in pain immediately, dropping the weights behind him as medical staff rushed on the stage to attend to him. His coach watched emotionally as Karapetyan was helped off the stage.
The 20-year-old Karapetyan won the European championships this year and finished third at the world championships last year. Kazakhstan’s Nijat Rahimov wound up winning the event to take the gold. Xiaojun Lyu of China finished second and Mohamad Mahmoud of Egypt took the bronze.
