United States fencer Daryl Homer won a silver medal in the men’s individual sabre event on Wednesday, losing to Hungary’s Aron Szilagyi. It was the Americans’ first medal in the event since 1984 when Peter Westbrook took home bronze, and first silver in 112 years when William Grebe bested three of the four other competitors in 1904.

It was the Americans’ first medal in the event in 32 years.


Homer spoke to SB Nation’s Rodger Sherman prior to the start of the Olympics in Rio, stating that he thought he was the best fencer in the world. He nearly proved it after finishing just sixth in the event at the Olympics in London.
For Szilagyi it was his second consecutive gold in the event and he did it in commanding fashion, 15-8.
South Korea’s Kim Jung-hwan won the bronze medal with an identical 15-8 win over Iran’s Mojtaba Abedini. Jung-hwan lost in the round of 32 four years ago at the Games in London.
