Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte set the stage for another 200m IM final with dominating semifinal

Rob Schumacher-USA TODAY Sports

The rivalry between Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte is a storied one and now it’s guaranteed to have at least one more chapter. The two dominated their 200m IM semifinal to set up another head-to-head race for the gold. Phelps won the semifinal in impression fashion, but Lochte was right there, finishing a close second.

The two have been teammates on several gold-medal winning relays, but they’ve also been rivals for more than a decade. Phelps is the three-time defending champion in the men’s 200m IM, dating back to the 2004 games in Athens. Lochte has been just shy of Phelps along that way, winning two silver medals and one bronze in the event.

The final may be the last time they face off for Olympic gold in this event. If the semi is any indication, it should be a very exciting final chapter, if it is indeed the final one.
