USA women’s gymnastics laid a beating on the rest of the world when it came to the team all-around. On Thursday, Simone Biles and Aly Raisman can extend that dominance to the individual event as well. Their attempt will not be televised live, but you’ll be able to watch it during prime time coverage on NBC that begins at 8 p.m. NBC will also feature swimming events, including the end of the Michael Phelps-Ryan Lochte rivalry, during that time.
Rio 2016 Olympics schedule: Time and TV schedule for Thursday’s events
Women’s gymnastics will crown an individual all-around champion, and Michael Phelps will duel Ryan Lochte one (final?) time.
For Biles, a victory in her sport’s biggest event would solidify her standing as one of the greatest gymnasts to walk the earth. The 19-year-old has won the past three all-around titles at the World Championships, but was too young to compete in the 2012 Games. She’s already earned team gold, but ascending to an Olympic crowd as the world’s premier athlete would be the coronation she deserves and the final piece of the puzzle for an already legendary career.
Raisman has two individual medals from her experience at the 2012 London Olympics, but finished fourth (in a tie-breaker) in the individual all-around that year. Now, she’s primed to avenge the loss. Like in ‘12, the 22-year old qualified in second place for the event. With four years more experience and the poise of a veteran, she’ll have the opportunity to challenge her teammate Biles and make a return trip to the podium.
Elsewhere in U.S. dominance, the Americans will return to the pool on Thursday after a 10-medal haul in only eight events on Monday and Tuesday. Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte will compete head to head for what may be the final time when they meet in the finals of the 200 meter individual medley. The pair finished first and second, respectively, in the race in the 2012 and 2004 Olympics and first and third in the 2008 Games.
While the men’s IM is the headliner, we may also get to watch a swimming beef rematch between American Lilly King and Russian Yulia Efimova. King told reporters she was “not a fan” of the Russian after she failed a pair of drug tests leading up to the games, then backed up her talk by defeating her in the 100m event. Now she’ll have the chance to bury her rival even deeper by beating her once more.
And that’s not all. Here’s all the best Olympic competition on tap for Thursday.
