The Americans won three swimming medals on Wednesday night.
The United States’ women’s 4x200m freestyle relay team won gold, beating second-place Australia by nearly two full seconds. Canada took bronze.
For American Katie Ledecky, it was her third gold medal of the Rio Olympics. She still has the 800m freestyle ahead. Her teammate Maya DiRado added a gold to her silver and bronze performances earlier in the week.
Dmitriy Balandin won Kazakhstan’s first-ever medal in a swimming event when he took home gold in the 200m breaststroke. It was Kazakhstan’s second gold of the Rio Olympics, and the country’s 18th all-time at the Summer Games. American Josh Prenot placed second to earn his first-ever medal and the United States’ first in the event since 2004.
In the men’s 100m freestyle, American Nathan Adrian took bronze, finishing five hundredths of a second behind Belgium’s Pieter Timmers. It was Adrian’s sixth Olympic medal overall and second in Rio. Australia’s 18-year-old Kyle Chalmers won gold.
In the women’s 200m butterfly, Spain’s Mireia Belmonte won gold, Australia’s Madeline Groves took silver and Japan’s Natsumi Hoshi bronze. Americans Cammile Adams and Hali Flickinger placed fourth and seventh respectively.
Elsewhere in the semifinal qualifying races, Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte finished one-two in the men’s 200m individual medley. The rivals will compete against each other for possibly the final time on Thursday night.
In the women’s 100m freestyle semifinal, Americans Simone Manuel and Abbey Weitzeil placed third and eighth respectively to qualify for Thursday’s final. Australia’s Cate Campbell finished with the top time.
USA’s Jacob Pebley and Ryan Murphy qualified for the 200m backstroke after finishing third and fourth overall. They will also compete in a Thursday night final.
