Rio 2016 medal count: Germany earns 2 golds in rowing on Thursday
The United States still leads the medal count as of Thursday at the Rio Olympics.
Immediately after that, the women’s iteration of the event was held and it also ended in favor of Germany. They finished a second ahead of the Netherlands, who took silver just a fraction of a second ahead of Poland, who managed bronze. For Germany, it was a big deal as they had just two gold medals going into the events, but now sit with four of them and seven total medals.
In the men’s pair finals, New Zealand took gold, while Poland added to its bronze a gold medal in the women’s double sculls event, finishing just ahead of Great Britain. In the men’s double sculls, Croatia managed its second gold medal of the Olympics -- giving them two golds total, with no silvers or bronze.
Finally, Switzerland edged out Denmark and France in the lightweight men’s four finals to wrap up the rowing medals handed out on the day.
After those early medal events, the standings look much like they did before up top, but Germany did enjoy a nice boost. The United States still has the most gold medals and the most total medals. They also have the most silvers, though Japan has one more bronze medal than they do.
