Rio’s green Olympic diving pool is closed: ‘The whole building smells like a fart’

Days after turning a concerning shade of green, Olympic officials have closed the diving pool in Rio de Janeiro. There’s no word yet as to whether the closure will affect the schedule of diving events going forward.

British bronze medalist Tom Daley broke the news on Twitter this morning.

The pool had steadily been turning greener and greener after beginning the Olympics as a calming shade of blue. Organizers have blamed everything from an algal bloom to a drop in alkalinity for the swamp water look. That color change also bled over to the facility’s water polo pool, which is part of the same open air structure. While workers were able to prevent that water from reaching the same foreboding shade vert, their dedication to killing everything in the water with chemicals wasn’t well received by the athletes who had to swim in it.

“I could barely open my eyes for the final quarter,” said U.S. competitor Tony Azevedo, after defeating France on Wednesday. “This is the Olympic Games and they are putting so much chlorine in the water that people can’t see. You can’t have that.”

The water, apparently, wasn’t just offensive to those who had to swim in it.
