Olympic swimming results 2016: Joseph Schooling beats Michael Phelps to win gold in men’s 100m butterfly

Singapore’s Joseph Schooling won the gold medal in the men’s individual 100-meter butterfly race, setting an Olympic record with a time of 50.39 seconds.

Second place for the silver medal was a three-way tie between Michael Phelps, South Africa’s Chad le Close and Hungary’s László Cseh. The trio all came in with times of exactly 51.14 seconds. They finished ahead of China’s Li Zhuhao at 51.26 seconds.

Schooling placed above Phelps in the 100-meter butterfly heat, and carried it into a win on Friday over him in the finals. Still, beating Phelps -- the best swimmer ever even though he’s 31 now -- is no joke. Schooling had met Phelps in 2008 and posed for a picture with him.

It was Phelps’ first finish that wasn’t gold, after taking first place in the 4x100-meter relay, 4x200-meter relay, 200-meter butterfly and 200-meter individual medley. He has one event left on Saturday, the 4x100-meter medley relay.

Phelps broke a 2,168-year record on Thursday with his 13th individual Olympic gold medal after tying it earlier in the week, an incredible record for the swimmer who is already the most decorated Olympian of all time. But he couldn’t add to that total with a win on Friday, being beat out by Schooling’s Olympic record.
