The gold is the 20-year-old’s first medal, as he’s competing in his first Olympics. Hancharou came into the event as somewhat of a dark horse to upset having recently made a name for himself when he finished second in the event at the World Championships.
The win for Belarus snapped China’s streak of two consecutive gold medal finishes, though the Chinese took the other two medals.
Dong Dong, the gold medal winner from the 2012 games in London, finished in second for the silver and Gao Lei placed third for bronze.
Hancharou finished with the second best score in the qualifying round, Gao had the top score, and Dong had the third-best.
For the United States, gymnast Logan Dooley did not qualify for the finals, placing 11th in a field that takes the top eight scores. He finished 1.61 points out of the last qualifying spot.
