Pernille Blume of Denmark took the gold medal in the women’s 50-meter freestyle race at the 2016 Rio Olympics on Saturday. Blume finished just ahead of Simone Manuel of the United States, who earned a silver medal in the process.

Aerican Simone Manuel finished second to earn the silver medal in the event.


Aliaksandra Herasimenia of Belarus finished the event in third place, earning a bronze medal for her troubles.
Manuel had already won the gold medal in the women’s 100-meter freestyle and a silver medal in the women’s 4x100-meter freestyle relay earlier in the Rio Olympics. Manuel actually tied Canada’s Penny Oleksiak in the 100-meter freestyle, which made her the first African-American woman to win an individual swimming medal ever.
Saturday’s event was incredibly close, with all swimmers seeming to have a chance at winning the event right up until the first three actually reached the wall.
Anthony Ervin, at 35 years old, won the gold medal for the men’s 50-meter freestyle on Friday, a full 16 years after his first gold medal.
