Olympic swimming results 2016: Michael Phelps leads U.S. to medley relay gold in his final Olympic race
On the back of Michael Phelps and Ryan Murphy, the United States won gold in the men’s 4x100-meter medley relay on Saturday.

For Michael Phelps, he claims it’s his last ever race at the Olympics. His butterfly leg of the relay is his final event in Rio and he says he does not plan on attending the Olympics in 2020. Phelps reiterated that he plans to retire from Olympic competition on Saturday, but even teammate Ryan Lochte says he thinks Phelps will return, the same position he held after Phelps claimed retirement following the 2012 London Olympics.
Great Britain took the lead after the second leg, but Phelps went in the water next for the USA and he finished just in front of Great Britain as Nathan Adrian hit the water in first place. He held and the US got the medal.
Joining Phelps in the relay was 100-meter backstroke gold medalist Ryan Murphy, 100-meter breaststroke bronze medalist Cody Miller and 100-meter freestyle bronze medalist Nathan Adrian. Brazil, China, Japan, Great Britain, the United States, Australia, Russia and Germany were the countries that made it into the relay.
Just before this event, the USA women’s swim team took the gold in the same event, finishing ahead of Australia in second and Denmark in third.
