Biles went into this event having won multiple world championship gold medals on the balance beam and floor exercise, but never won a major championship in the vault. She finished behind Hong Un-Jong and Paseka in the vault at the 2015 World Championships, and faced them again on Sunday.
Oksana Chusovitina was also part of the competition, participating in her seventh Olympic Games at age 41.
Biles will have two more opportunities at individual gold after helping the United States to the team all-around gold and winning the individual all-around gold. She is set to compete in the balance beam finals on Monday and the floor exercise finals on Tuesday. She will be competing with compatriot Aly Raisman in the floor exercise and Laurie Hernandez in the balance beam.
Gabby Douglas and Madison Kocian are the other Team USA women competing in individual competition, with the uneven bars competition also on Sunday.
