The United States women’s volleyball team lost its first set against China, in part thanks to a slow start with six service errors, but proceeded to win the next three to advance to the top of Pool B in the preliminary rounds.
Olympic volleyball results 2016: United States women earn top seed while Netherlands surprises
The Netherlands hasn’t competed in Olympics women’s volleyball since 1996, but it earned the No. 2 seed in its pool. Meanwhile, the U.S. hasn’t lost a game.


The U.S. team earned the top seed after beating all five teams it faced in pool play, including 2-2 China on Sunday. The game was more for bragging rights than anything else -- China couldn’t have taken the top seed from the United States no matter what happened.
The United States will take on fourth-seeded Japan on Tuesday in the quarterfinals.
The No. 2 spot in Pool B went to underdog Netherlands, playing its first Olympics in volleyball since 1996. They went 4-1 in the preliminary rounds, giving them 11 points needed to fall three behind the United States. In third place in Pool B is Serbia.
In Pool A, Brazil earned the top seed while Russia took the No. 2 seed. South Korea and Japan round out the teams advancing from that group. Here are the games that will be played on Tuesday.
