After failing to win a gold medal in a single day for the first time since 2008 on Monday, Team USA got back to business on Tuesday, winning two golds thanks to gymnastics star Simone Biles and triple jumper Christian Taylor. The U.S. added four silver medals and two bronze to bring its medal count total up to 84 in these 2016 Olympic Games. Great Britain has 19 gold medals, beating out China’s 17, but China tops Great Britain with 51 medals to Great Britain’s 50.
2016 Olympics medal count: Simone Biles puts Team USA back on track with more gold on Tuesday
The U.S. still leads the medal count thanks to a big day from Simone Biles and the U.S. track team.
After 11 days of competition, the U.S. has 28 of each -- gold, silver and bronze.
Biles was the star of the day once again, dominating the women’s floor routine. She scored a whopping 15.966 as she executed a nearly flawless routine. As expected, Aly Raisman finished second behind Biles with a score of 15.500 as she also was nearly perfect. Unfortunately for Raisman, she was going up against perhaps the best gymnast ever, and Biles was just too good.
Taylor led a 1-2 sweep for Team USA in the triple jump, as Will Claye won the silver medal. Claye also got engaged after his silver medal win. Jenny Simpson, meanwhile, added a bronze medal in the 1,500 meters, the United States’ first ever medal in the event.
