The Greco-Roman portion of the wrestling events at the 2016 Rio Olympics have concluded, which means it’s time for freestyle wrestling. The differences between the two are significant: freestyle wrestlers can use their legs offensively and defensively, which is not allowed in Greco-Roman wrestling.
2016 Olympic wrestling live stream: Time, TV schedule and how to watch women’s freestyle matches online
Freestyle wrestling at the Olympics gets underway on Wednesday.
Freestyle wrestlers can also do single- or double-leg takedowns to bring their opponent to the mat, and freestyle wrestlers also do not have to maintain contact with their opponent while executing a takedown. In Greco-Roman, if you go for a takedown, you have to follow your opponent to the ground and never break contact.
It’s an entirely different beast based on these changes alone, and there are, of course, more on top of that, as well.
On Wednesday, three women’s divisions will go through elimination rounds, repechage matches and then, finally, the medal matches. That includes the women’s 48kg, 58kg, and 69kg divisions. The elimination rounds will get underway bright and early at 9 a.m. ET, with the repechage and medal matches expected to begin at 3 p.m.
MSNBC and NBCSN will carry television coverage of the women’s wrestling events on Wednesday, though the coverage will be tape delayed. NBCSN will not pick up coverage of the finals until 7:30 p.m., which means a live stream is definitely the best option if you’re in a position to use one.
NBC Sports will have live streams of the elimination rounds as well as the medal matches and repechage. Below is all the info you need to watch the action.
