Judo is done and so is Greco-Roman wrestling, and with them comes the start of freestyle wrestling and the sport of Taekwondo. Based on ancient martial arts, Taekwondo at the Olympics is constantly changing. There were multiple controversial judging decisions during the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing and as such, competitors now will wear special headgear that electronically scores kicks to the head.

For the London Olympics, they added vests that electronically tracked blows to the chest. This is to try and take the human error out of the refereeing and judging. They will also compete on an octagonal mat instead of a square and spinning kicks now earn more points than they used to due to their difficulty.

Scoring in general is being revamped, all in an effort to make matches more accurate, and easier to understand for the average viewer.

On Wednesday, the opening divisions will consist of the women’s 49kg round and men’s 58kg round. The Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, repechage round and medal matches will all be played, starting bright and early at 8 a.m. ET. The repechage and medal matches will begin at 7 p.m. and should last a couple hours before the two gold medals are given out.

Steven Lopez, a five time world champion and competitor for the United States will not be competing until the men’s 80kg division takes to the mats on Friday.

Television coverage of the day will be tape delayed, first beginning between 3:15 p.m. and 5 p.m. on the USA network for quarterfinals and semifinals matches, then on NBCSN in the 11 p.m. to 12 a.m. block. Live streams will be available via NBC Sports.
