Olympic volleyball results 2016: USA women upset by Serbia in semifinals
The United States women will not take gold in Rio as they were upset in the semifinals by Serbia.

The U.S. women were heavily favored to win the gold medal, especially after China upset Brazil in the quarterfinals. Brazil was a force and had the crowd on its side, and many felt the path to a gold opened up for the U.S. when they were eliminated. The U.S. made it to the gold medal game in each of the past two Summer Games, but fell to Brazil both times.
For Serbia, it was the first time they had made it to the final four in the sport at the Olympics, and now they will be competing for the gold for the first time as well.
Thursday’s match was a brutal five-setter, with Serbia ultimately taking it by a score of 20-25, 25-17, 25-21, 16-25, 15-13. Serbia played very solid ball, while the US committed a wide range of unforced errors.
The other semifinal match, between the Netherlands and China, is set for 9:15 p.m. ET. The U.S. can still win a bronze medal this year, but they will have to beat the loser of the other semifinal to do so.
